5 HVAC Maintenance Tips All Homeowners Should Know

1. Replace Filters

Replacing your filters are dependent on a few things such as, If you use your system constantly, if you have pets, and how much traffic you have in your home, You may want to check your filter at least once a month and find out on average what length of time before changing your filter works best for your system for optimal efficiency.

2. Check Your Outdoor Unit’s Clearance

A safe clearance for your unit is two feet, It is important to keep your unit free of obstruction. If you have trees or shrubs near your outside unit, it is recommended to at least trim them back to allow the system to run efficiently.

3. Clean the Condensate Drain Line

Your HVAC system has a condensate drain line. If this line becomes clogged, it can cause the coil in your indoor unit to freeze up and fail to operate properly.

4. Keep Your Evaporator and Condenser Coils Clean

Both your indoor and outdoor HVAC units have a coil. It is important that these coils remain free of debris for consistent airflow to keep the units running.

You can simply rinse down your outdoor unit’s coil with a hose to help keep it clean, although if a buildup of dirt has gotten between the fins of the coil than a special cleaner is necessary for removing all debris.

5. Check Air Ducts During HVAC Maintenance

This is a simple maintenance procedure. With the unit running, walk through the house to ensure that air is flowing through the vents.

If you do not feel the air coming through, make sure the vents are fully open and not being obstructed.

It is also a good idea not to close too many vents. The more vents you close the harder the unit will have to work.
